I Can’t Believe it’s on YouTube! DIONYSUS IN ’69
Story: I can’t even begin to tell you.
Why You Should Watch It: Brian. De. Palma. If you’re a fan of the director who brought you “Carrie”, “Scarface”, and “Dressed to Kill”, then this viewing experience will be like candy.
Okay, this movie is not everybody. Even though there is sex and tits and ass and dicks too (something for everybody), this is a live show filmed in black and white 16mm in the late 60s, pre-AIDS, mid-Vietnam, mid-civil rights, mid-feminist movement and all that shit is literally spilled on stage here.
This kind of thing normally would not interest me (even with the nudity), but the way it is filmed appropriately magnifies this live experience. Like “Woodstock,” the entire thing is on split screen. The audience’s dumbstruck expressions and the actors deeply engaged in their tribal, acting school eske, shameless, “I will regret this when I have children” performances.
Although not a great film, you feel DePalma’s identity gestating. His shock value. His camera caressing his subjects. A staple of his greatest works. I Can’t Believe It’s On YouTube.
