I Can’t Believe it’s on YouTube! Fear and Desire

Story: During war, two soldiers find a woman from the enemy’s side and hold her hostage.

Why You Should See It: “Fear and Desire” is a must see for any Stanley Kubrick fan. It’s far from a great film, or even a good one — but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Kubrick himself tried to ban this movie, his first, from ever being seen, so he would disagree.

But now he’s gone and “Fear and Desire” is alive. I see watching The Master’s first film like going to a Museum and seeing Van Gogh’s sketches. It an opportunity to see genius gestating. The fact that you would not watch this film and think,”this guy is brilliant” makes it even more fascinating to watch (and gives you hope about your own career). But you see his themes and need to do extreme close ups on the eye at play. The absurdity of war, the machinery of man, etc.

The film also stars Paul Mazursky, who would direct “Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice” and most recently appear on “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episodes. He’s actually not bad in it. I Can’t Believe It’s on YouTube.
