Story: A bunch of girls talk, and that talk overlaps, and you’re never sure what anyone is saying.
Why You Should See It: This is Sofia Coppola’s first short. I am not a Sofia Coppola fan, but many people are. And whenever there’s a huge following for someone I could care less about, I remain curious about why so many people adore said person.
In the case of Sofia Coppola, I’ve asked myself this question many times. She has made cameo appearances in my film education, beginning with co-writing “Life With Zoe” as part of the New York Stories trilogy her father took part in (the other two were directed by Woody Allen and Scorsese). She played the daughter in “The Godfather Part III” and was universally panned for it. Then, I didn’t hear about her again until “The Virgin Suicides” came out.
I don’t hate or love her scrapbook filmmaking style. It just doesn’t do anything for me. But if there’s one film of her’s I actually enjoyed, it would be “Lick the Star.” Maybe because it’s in black and white. Maybe because her style is more tolerable when it’s 10 minutes instead of two hours. Or maybe I just actually liked it and saw talent in it. Watch it for yourself. Thing is, I can actually believe it’s on youtube, but I Can’t Believe I Liked It!
