Story: A rich asshole gets careless and blinds an innocent woman. Destroyed by the event, the rich jerk becomes a changed man and seduces the blind woman.
Why You Should See It: This story is so ridiculous, it would have only worked with Douglas Sirk at the helm. Essentially, the studios wanted “All That Heaven Allows, Part II.” So Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman starred again as the romantic duo.
This time, Rock is a jerk, and Jane is sensitive and zen-like. But Sirk’s technicolor and pain bleeds deep into this unique motion picture, later remade by John Woo, into the classic HK action film, “The Killer.”
A hired gun who was generally disgusted with the material that was forced on him, all Sirk could do was inject pain into his movies. And pain you feel. Despite all the crazy, illogical things that occur in this movie, you do feel things. Why doesn’t Jane know Rock is the same guy who took away her vision, she has heard his voice? Why doesn’t anyone tell Jane, including her daughter who hates Rock, who this dude is? It’s one thing for Rock to help her, but does have to fall in love with her?
Sounds like “General Hospital” doesn’t it? It is. But with deep emotions, of the human kind. A great director can take shit and make it all work. Sirk has taught me conviction. He was at the height of his career and knew how to inject his heart into a fucking telephone book. I Can’t Believe It’s On YouTube.
