Better off Dead

Story:  John Cusack has a crazy mom, smarter little brother, and his girlfriend just dumped him… so, he tries to kill himself, until he fails at that too and decides to try to win his girlfriend back.

Why You Should Watch It: I was in Utah when this PG-13 gem came out.  It was the movie to go watch, but there’s one problem in Utah.  Mormons decided B.O.D. was rated “R.”  And they check IDs avidly there to make sure no one violates this law.

So, I didn’t catch B.O.D. until it came out on cable a year and half a later.  And it was seemingly one of those films that was ALWAYS on.  So, I’m not sure if I ever bothered to see it from beginning to end.  We’d turn on HBO or Showtime or The Movie Channel and there was the scene were the two Asian guys talked like Howard Cossell while racing Cusak… or the scene where the Mom cooks a mutant… or one of the numerous scenes were the eerie paper boy demanded to be paid (“two dollars”).  Cut to last August.

I’m writing a teen comedy so I’m re-watching all teen comedies, and that includes whatever I can find on YouTube.  B.O.D. was unique, absurd and pleasantly weird… especially for a studio movie.  It was reminiscent of “Airplane” or “The Naked Gun” or my actual teenage years, which were definitely absurd and hyper real.

Maybe the Mormons were right.  They should have just slapped “R” on this one.  Because in my book, most teen comedies rated “R” are more accurate.  I Can’t Believe It’s On YouTube.
