Story: A middle aged woman falls for her twenty something gardener, who could be insane or “special needs” because he’s a super young Mel Gibson.
Why You Should See It: The Middle aged woman is Piper Laurie, who played Carrie White’s “crazier than a shit house rat” mother. Seems the tables have turned. She’s now the sane, stable one in the relationship. And Mel is the crazy, inconsistent one.
While this movie is pretty much a rip-off of “Harold and Maude,” it has so much heart and its in the suburbs of Australia. So, it is different. And it also has Mel Gibson, who this early on, demonstrates his wrecking ball nature. The unstable blue eyes. The quivering mannerisms. The self-destructive sheen.
The chemistry between Gibson and Laurie is a ticking time bomb of tension. Since Laurie is also brilliant at playing crazy, you half-expect her to lose it at any moment. And they both get to display their psychotic acting chops in this odd fairy tale that is the perfect thing to watch on a February 15, the day after Valentine’s Day. I Can’t Believe It’s on YouTube.
